So as we all know the media has come up with this concept that The Harry Potter Series and The Twilight Saga are in some way related and thus shall be compared on a regular basis with the only thing connecting them being that they were both made into movies and have relatively attractive actors… right?! I can’t stand how the media took two great book series and turned them into this teenage crazed hype, comparing the two and brainwashing people into thinking that they are in anyway related. Well I am here to weigh in on this matter. Feel free to leave any comments relating and please please please give me your opinion of the books and the comparisons being made… who knows it may just be me who doesn’t get the comparison
Lets start with the Harry Potter Series! I read this series first, I was one of those people who saw the movies and bought the books at midnight and read them in less than 30 hours after buying them… I was a true fan of the entire series and found it to be completely relate-able to myself at the time. Harry Potter for me was the series that got me into reading in the first place (Thanks Mom & Dad). It drew me in with its adventure, its school, its characters and of course the ability to see myself within its characters and story line. Although I love the entire series, the 6th book of the series is what really sealed the deal for me. This book in my opinion was the book I could most easily relate too, probably due to all the “realistic” relationships that took place and the raw emotion present after the events of the story. Of course I also loved the fantasy aspect of a Wizarding world and I think that aspect is also important, being submerged into a made up world while still being able to fully relate to the characters like the school could really exist! Getting lost in The Harry Potter Series is like leaving the real world you lead for one with adventure and magic with a little romance here and there to keep you hooked
Onto Twilight. Although I was a die hard Harry Potter Fan, I read the Twilight Saga after my sister and I had an argument as to what series was better… yes I was being drawn into the Harry Potter vs Twilight hype that the media had thrust into societies ignorant youth. (I admit it!) I read the series in less than a week and I fell in love with it just like I had with the Harry Potter Series but for many different reasons. I loved the Shakespearean aspect of the series. By this I mean the forbidden love undertones. I found it to be daring and exciting, I wanted more. While reading Twilight I noticed that I felt some similarities in me relating to the series with the dynamics of high school and family but what really drew me to the series was that I was young, innocent and dying to be Edward’s Bella with someone (if that makes sense lol). I was in that stage of not only wanting someone like Edward but wanting the adventure, the romance and of course part of the rebellion. I love Twilight but I feel as though it gives me unrealistic expectations for falling in love, oh well I was hooked and fell in love!
I suppose from a non-reader’s stance I can maybe see why a lot of people feel the need to compare the two… but lets get real and actually read the books!
Similarities: Fantasy element, Romance (sort of), both made into movies & Robert Pattinson played in both…
Differences: EVERYTHING ELSE! Alright I think that the biggest issue I have with the comparisons is that they are not story line related at all… Harry Potter is about a young wizard trying to find his rightful place in the world while battling {the villian} and of course all the normal teenage problems (like girls!). He has friends, school and somewhat of a family but he just has magical powers on top of it. Twilight is about a forbidden romance between a normal teenager with normal problems (divorce, boys, school) and a fantasy character who leads a semi-normal human life… while also of course facing a few problems with {their villians/counterparts}.
Again two different stories lines with different characters, different plots, different problems and different villains, written in two different styles of writing. I highly recommend everyone to read both series, especially if you are a fan of one and if you are a compare-er of the two I would love to know why you think they are so similar because I honestly can’t see it. Again I love both series for different reasons and I like them both for being different.

I’ve read both series. The huge source of difference between Harry Potter and Twilight is the writing skills of the respective authors. Stephanie Meyer can write, J.K. Rowling can write well. I honestly stopped in the middle of Twilight series, just can’t continue. Maybe it’s a gal’s book
Haha maybe it is too girly. I love both series (obviously) but it just annoys me that people relate the two when there is no need for it. This was probably more of a rant than a post but oh well. Thanks for commenting!
I really enjoyed reading your comparison, and appreciate the fact that you did your best to remain as neutral (or loving both) as possible. I personally am a fan of Harry Potter, and have not read the Twilight series. I doubt I ever will, considering I have absolutely no interest in anything it has to offer (romance, vampires, etc) However, on the note about comparing the two – one could argue that Harry Potter was what got young people like you to read in the 1990′s, while the Twilight saga was what got young people to read in this decade. Twilight was the next big hit as far as series go, and one could claim that the following is the Hunger Games, which I personally think is a wonderful series. Have you read those yet?
